Identifier: MS-0208

Content Description

The bulk of Richard Millard's papers consists of printed posts to the _Stained Glass Forum_, an online discussion group created in 2004. While Millard's own posts comprise the majority of the material, researchers will find posts of others to whom Millard responded or who responded to Millard. Other email correspondence may occasionally be found among the discussion group posts. The posts are organized chronologically largely address stained glass techniques and education. Millard's role in the formation of the American Glass Guild is also well-documented in these posts.

Other materials in the papers include teaching materials, drawings of faces (many of which are signed and dedicated to particular individuals), unpublished biographical writings, and writings by Millard's twin brother, Ronald Millard, who was also a stained glass artist. There is also a maquette for a stained glass window created for Highland Park Baptist Church in 2000.

Biographical / Historical

The son of an Australian painter and decorator, Richard Millard was born into an artistic family. He grew up in the United States and Australia. Both he and his twin brother Ronald (Buddy) pursued careers in stained glass.

In the 1950s, Richard Millard took an apprenticeship at Rambausch, a stained glass studio based in New York City. At age 21, he took a position with Durhan Studios. He then co-owned a stained glass business with Bill Roemer for eight years, and ultimately worked as a freelance stained glass artist for 30 years.

Millard was an accomplished glass painter who published in the professional literature, contributed to the Stained Glass Association of America's _SGAA Reference and Technical Manual_, and served as a monitor of the Internet discussion group _Stained Glass Forum_. In the mid 1990s, he began teaching glass painting at his studio in New Hampshire. He was active in the Stained Glass Association of America and was a founding member of the American Glass Guild.

Millard died in 2011.
