Scope and Contents

This collection consists of research materials that Mark Pendergrast created and consulted while writing his 2003 award-winning book _Mirror, Mirror: A History of the Human Love Affair with Reflection_. It is divided into four series:

(1) Interview Transcriptions and Notes, 1969-2002

(2) Correspondence and Subject Files, 1719-2002

(3) Research Journals, 1990-2002

(4) Miscellaneous Materials, 1993-2004

Conditions Governing Use

The Copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specified conditions is that the reproduction is not to be "used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research." If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of "fair use," that user may be liable for copyright infringement. Biographical / Historical

Mark Pendergrast has been a professional non-fiction author since 1991. Educated at Harvard University and Simmons College, he began his career as an academic librarian and freelance writer for newspapers and magazines. Pendergrast has written a number of well-received books, including _For God, Country and Coca-Cola: The Definitive History of the Great American Soft Drink and the Company That Makes It_ (1993), _Uncommon Grounds: The History of Coffee and How it Transformed Our World_ (2000), _Mirror, Mirror: A History of the Human Love Affair with Reflection_ (2003), and _Inside the Outbreaks: The Elite Medical Detectives of the Epidemic Intelligence Service_ (2010).
