Biography

John Frederick Amelung was born in 1741 or 1742 in Bremen, Germany, and immigrated to the United States in the 1780s. A glassmaker, he established the New Bremen Glass Manufactory in Maryland upon his arrival. The company went bankrupt in the 1790s, but while it was operating it produced a variety of glass products, including window glass, bottles, and tableware. Amelung died in 1798.
