Biography

Jan Feenstra, born in Friesland, The Netherlands on December 22, 1929, was a mechanical engineer for Philips Glass in Eindhoven from 1952 until his retirement in 1990, eventually heading the Mechanical Department and Central Laboratory. Feenstra was also a writer, lecturer and teacher, publishing numerous articles on glass technologies in a variety of publications. Upon retirement, Feenstra conducted a glass course at the Rivierland College in Tiel for many years, sponsored by Schott-Nederland and the NV Vereeningde Glasfabrieken Leerdam.

Feenstra studied at the MTS and HTS in Leeuwarden in the 1940s. After joining Philips, he worked developing mechanization for the production of glass ovens and products, such as bulbs and television screens, and new technologies in optical glass and glass fibers. Feenstra was involved in the professionalization of glass techniques and processes, publishing articles in publications such as Glass Vademecum. He was also interested in the history and culture of glass production techniques, curating exhibitions and lecturing on those topics.

Feenstra died December 24, 2016 in Huizen, Noord-Holland. He was married to Tiny Kamstra; they had five sons.

Scope and Contents The Johannes Feenstra Papers contain primarily lecture and course materials, with accompanying slides, videos and videotapes, although media is housed by format, not with accompanying curriculum. There is one box of personal papers and photographs, correspondence and clippings.
