Biography
Clement F. J. (Clem) Nitsche was born in Bohemia in 1880. He emigrated with his family, first to England, and later to the United States. His father, Josef (Joseph) Nitsche, worked as a glass engraver in Corning, New York, and taught his son the trade.
Nitsche worked in various glass cutting factories in Corning and operated a home cutting shop with his father from 1894 to 1937. In 1937, he closed the shop and trained engravers at Steuben Glass (Firm). He entered retirement when he was about 70 years old.
Nitsche died in 1979.

Scope and Contents
This collection documents the work of two generations of glass engravers in Bohemia and in Corning, New York. It contains documentation of Josef Nitsche's and Clement Nitsche's work histories, including Josef Nitsche's official employment record while working in Bohemia, a daybook documenting work completed by the Nitsche home cutting shop, receipts, design drawings by Clement Nitsche, and other materials.
