Biography

Ottorino N. “Rino” Mercadante was born in Torre De Passeri, Italy in 1925 to Edgardo and Alfonsia Sensisi Mercadante. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice, Italy and pursued a career as an artist. In 1954, he married Ileana Tarquinio. Together, they immigrated to the United States in 1956.

Mercadante found employment as a senior consumer products designer for Corning Glass Works. Mercadante acquired a number of patents for the company, and he remained in its employ until his until his retirement in 1987. Mercadante also designed for Steuben.

Mercadante died in 2001 in Corning, New York.

Scope and Contents This collection consists of about 130 design drawings and renderings created for the decoration of Corelle, Centura, and other tableware brands produced by Corning Incorporated. While most are clearly attributed to Mercadante, some have other designers' marks or are without attribution.
